With the 600+ pre-registered attendees for next week’s inaugural HITEC Amsterdam, Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP®) is interpreting the strong interest as a sign of vitality for the hospitality industry and its stakeholders. In 2017, HFTP expanded its stakes in its 45-year Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference (HITEC®), by adding two boutique events in hospitality-strong regions to complement the larger, North American HITEC that runs annually in June. The first of three HITECs in 2017 is HITEC Amsterdam, March 28-30 at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, with pre-registration already exceeding the expected attendance number. This sign of popularity, plus the fact that the exhibit hall sold out in 72 hours when space was made available last June, demonstrates the need for a regional, concentrated forum to discuss the ins-and-outs of hospitality technology via networking, education and exhibits. Intertraffic Amsterdam has partnered with Automotive Week 2017 to underline the cooperation opportunities between the traffic technology and automotive industry as these key industries are undergoing significant technological transformations. The developments in the automotive, telecom and the Internet world are moving very fast. The user is constantly connected to the Internet and expects road authorities, transport operators and service providers to go along with these trends. From Sunday 26 until Friday 31 March 2017 (inter)national mobility experts will gather at the Automotive Campus in Helmond, the Netherlands to jointly discuss how future mobility can be organised. The Intertraffic summit will be held on Tuesday 28 March.

A vast discussion point is how to deal with the increasingly complex road situations when more and more vehicles are connected to each other and to the Internet. (GINA) -The National Sports Commission (NSC) is looking to resuscitate the abandoned sports complex in New Amsterdam, Berbice to provide another avenue for youth development.

The complex, (known as the old Bermine Club) was once the sporting hub for New Amsterdam, and was used for facilitating events such as wedding receptions, parties, and sporting activities and even housed a large pool.

The complex, which was formally operated and owned by the Berbice Mining Enterprise Limited (BERMINE), is now the responsibility of the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).

Director of Sport Christopher Jones and a team from the NSC, along with the Mayor of New Amsterdam Kirt Wynter, visited the complex last Saturday. The intention is to take control of the site and make it the NSC’s subcommittee headquarters in New Amsterdam.

Jones told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the NSC, through the Ministry of Education, will be writing to NICIL in an attempt to acquire the building. Jones noted that the building will cost approximately $200M to rehabilitate. However, he pointed out that once rehabilitated, the sports complex will be able to generate revenue.

“There is need for rehabilitation works to be done on the building. Downstairs there is a sports bar that could easily be rented out for income generation for the commission. There are several spaces that could accommodate persons wanting to host wedding receptions and parties. So therefore, we recognise that this space here can generate income on its own and pay for itself,” Jones explained.

The sports complex is expected to be the main hub for sports related activities in Regions Five and Six, and according to Jones, similar initiatives will be undertaken in  Regions Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten.

Wynter said that he was delighted that the NSC will acquire the building. The Mayor said that the complex was once a vibrant building but after the mining company left the town, it was left to deteriorate.

“I am glad now that the National Sports Commission is embarking on this venture of taking it up, restoring it and opening it up back to the public where we can all enjoy the facility once again,” said Wynter, adding that once the building is acquired, the council will be supportive in ensuring that the facilities are up and running again.

Nyenrode Business GameAs of September 2017, full-time MBA students at Nyenrode Business Universiteit will be studying in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. This move aims to give students more opportunities to integrate into the European business landscape and community.

Nyenrode University makes it a priority to help students find a great company to start their careers with. The political event will feature a line-up of contemporary artists and talks

A regular dance night at Amsterdam’s Paradiso Noord, Tolhuistuin, Progress Bar is a political party that brings together a roster of diverse artists along with a program of interviews and lectures.

On 1 April, the party will be playing host to the New Jersey rapper Cakes Da Killa, the self-described ‘genre-fluid’ DJ An Ni, DJ Firmeza from the batida scene, founder of Progress Bar Juha and the Berlin-based producer Kablam.

The writer and activist Wail Qasim will also be giving a talk on the night. Having worked as a freelance writer for publications such as The Guardian and Vice, Qasim often explores issues dealing with racism, gender identity and black social movements.

A series of organ recitals is planned to honor Dr. Wylie S. (Van) Quinn, organist and choirmaster at Chapel of the Cross since 1970. He will retire in June.

His ministry to hundreds of adult and young people in five choirs, to many organ students and to the congregation has been significant. His influence on the parish’s liturgy and music as well as the larger music community in Chapel Hill will be lasting.

“There is a great nurturing, sustaining, spiritual force in music that has stood the test of time,” Quinn says on the church website. “It deepens us and opens us up to the realities of God.”

The first recital on Saturday, March 25, will feature organist Jacob Reed, a senior at Yale University where he has a double major in music and mathematics. He began his study of organ with Quinn.

On Friday, April 7, the organist is Dr. David Arcus, now organist at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hillsborough who was at Duke University for nearly 30 years where he served in various capacities in the department of music, Divinity School and Duke Chapel.

He has degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the School of Music at Yale University where he earned his doctor of musical arts degree.

On Friday, April 21, Dr. Susan Moeser of UNC is the organist. She is now university organist and instructor of organ. She has had faculty appointments teaching organ, music theory and music history at the universities of Nebraska, South Carolina, Montana and Pennsylvania State University. She received the doctor of musical arts degree in organ performance from the University of Kansas.

There is a great nurturing, sustaining, spiritual force in music that has stood the test of time.

Wylie S. (Van) Quinn, organist and choirmaster

All three recitals will be at 7:30 p.m. on the Kleuker organ in the church, 304 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill. A reception in the Great Hall will follow each concert. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Female Passover seder

The Levin Jewish Community Center, 1937 W. Cornwallis Road, Durham, will host a Passover seder for women and girls 6 and older on Monday, April 3, led by Hollis Gauss, a Jewish educator.

The seder from 6 to 8 p.m. will include a traditional Passover dinner and will explore the Haggadah with an emphasis on the role of women.

The event is cosponsored by Chapel Hill-Durham Hadassah, the Jewish Federation of Chapel Hill-Durham and the Lerner Jewish Community Day School.

The Faith Connections on Mental Illness seventh annual conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael St., Chapel Hill.

“Transforming Lives: Overcoming Stigma in Mental Illness” will focus on stereotypes, bias, stigma and silence faced by those dealing with mental illness.

Breakfast and lunch will be included.

Faith Connections on Mental Illness is a nonprofit organization working with all faith communities to welcome, include, support, educate and advocate for individuals and families who are living with mental illness.

Nazi resistance novel

A local author, Mary Dingee Fillmore, spent 13 years working on an acclaimed historical novel, “An Address in Amsterdam,” about a young Jewish woman who risks her life in the underground in the Dutch resistance to the Nazis.

Mary will speak about how the Dutch faced their dilemmas and discuss how people of faith and others can inspire us now. She will be at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 210 St. Mary’s Road, Hillsborough, at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, and at Beth El Synagogue, 1004 Watts St., Durham, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 26.

Critics and scholars have praised Mary’s book for its research and for its rich and evocative portrait of Amsterdam, but more for its gripping story.

The author spent 30 months in Amsterdam, tracking down significant events and places, many of which were unmarked, such as the Anne Frank family home before they went into hiding.

Internet etiquette

Antioch Baptist Church, west of Chapel Hill at 1707 N.C. 54 White Cross Road, will host a discussion on Internet etiquette, cyber safety and cyber-bullying at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 4.

Titled “Proud of What you Post: A Program for the Whole Family,” this event aims to foster an inter-generational conversation about pre-teen life in the digital age. The event for those age 10 and up is free and open to all.

Dementia conference

The Health Ministry of White Rock Baptist Church, 3400 Fayetteville St. in Durham, will sponsor a conference on “Alzheimer’s and other Dementia” from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 25, in the fellowship hall at the church.

Dr. Goldie Byrd, director of the Center for Outreach in Alzheimer Aging Community Health, will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Edward Shaw, co-author of “Keeping Love alive as Memories Fade: the 5 Love Languages and the Journey” will make a presentation. Also, Attorney David Morris will address financial issues involved in caring for someone with dementia.

Nonprofits that serve the aging population will make a presentation.

‘Inside Out’

Unity Center of Peace, 8800 Seawell School Road, Chapel Hill, is having a special screening of the Disney aninmated film “Inside Out,” at 5 p.m. Saturday March 25, as part of its monthly film series in which viewers will see a documentary or a feature film that provides insights into opportunities for spiritual growth.

The screening is free (donations appreciated), and pizza will be provided. Expect freewheeling a discussion of kindness and compassion based on the characters and stories.
